Solid Black

In 2003, AMD beat Intel important milestone in creating the first 64-bit x86 processor PC. If that were not enough, the Athlon 64 was not only a more CPU smart thanks to its highly integrated architecture, which was simply faster than Intel's Pentium 4. AMD had a serious blow to Intel and a sense of expectation that created the world's second violin maker of the CPU since then has struggled to comply.

In other words, AMD is in the best mouse that gives a Intel occasional elephant scare. More significantly, research and development resources from AMD just be enough to keep going for an afternoon Intel. Waiting AMD Intel bum regularly used in a very fancy dish. It is in this context that the return of the last two to form with the AMD 45nm chip Phenom II and now his release the new socket AM3 processors should be seen.

That the Second Phenom enough to join a win this month qualified Supertest CPU is very spectacular, given the horror that the original Phenom chip. Similarly, the fact that the key new feature introduced by AM3, ie, support for DDR3 memory, has been on offer Intel for two years does not mean that AMD has been hopelessly outdated. Quite the contrary. Leaving from Intel to do the donkey work of development was a decision DDR3 intelligent. After all, why not let Intel Bury countless millions of dollars in infrastructure to create and support for DDR3 and only then step in and reap the benefits on the cheap?

What is more, was old and rusty front side bus Intel processor that needs the bandwidth of DDR3 boost the supply. AMD has had a high bandwidth integrated memory controller for several years and in less urgent need for a bandwidth upgrade.

Seamlessly upgrade

That is the background for the Socket AM3, but what is exactly what the delivery? First, it's always worth remembering that any AMD platform, often making only exposes the features present in their CPUs. Thus, while the connector supports DDR3 memory, the initial limit of 1,333 MHz frequency is a characteristic of AM3 CPUs support 'in the memory controller chip, instead of taking himself or the motherboard.

Memory controllers likely in the future will allow faster memory today at AM3 motherboards. AM3 also debuts AMD thermal sensation and serial VID interface. The first is on empowerment of the temperatures of individual samples to be measured more accurately. The latter allows more precise control of blood once again for individual nuclei. Gather them together and the result is better overall power and performance management and therefore a planet a little longer for a PC.

The last change more important is to pin-OUT AM3 agreement. The total number of drops of 940 pin AM2 and AM2 + for 938. This reduction in pins are willing to let the chips AM3 fall in AM2 boards but not vice versa. This gives you the option to buy an AM3 processor today, using it on their existing AM2 motherboard and improved treatment AM3 complete at a later stage.

As for performance, well, the benefits of AM3 are frankly slim to none. In our HD video encoding and professional 3D rendering benchmark is not so much as a fraction of a second faster. That said, AM3 gives you a few extra frames per second in your favorite strategy game. If this seems like a poor return for an investment in an entirely new platform. It is worth remembering that reflects the fact that the latest AMD has hardly been deprived of bandwidth. Even setting quad-core, DDR2 memory technology has been nice to keep the processor fed with data Phenom. However, as the AMD future core counts in eight and beyond, there will be a point at which the bandwidth becomes a problem.

With AM3, AMD is now able and prepared for that eventuality. Tan, AM3 is not a radical change for AMD. In fact, the only surprising aspect involves CPUs AMD has chosen to offer at launch. Five models AM3 are initially available: three quad-core processors and a pair of triples. The last two, known as the Phenom X3 II 710 and 720 Black Edition is the first triple-core based on the latest AMD 45nm silicon and healthy sport not only 2.6GHz and 2.8GHz frequencies of operation but also the full compliment 6MB of memory L3 cache.

As for quads AM3, the Phenom X4 II 805 and 810 chips are cut with only 4 MB of L3 cache, 2MB cut compared to the first IIS Phenom, and clockspeeds of 2.5 GHz and 2.6 GHz, respectively. So far, so sensible. However, AM3 is superior chip that is rather disconcerting. The Phenom X4 910 packages 11 6 MB of L3 cache altogether. But clock frequency of 2.6 GHz which is significantly slower than the current 940 Black edition – an AM2 chip, of course.

That's a problem because achieving full AM3 settings will be very expensive. Along with a new CPU and motherboard, a pair of expensive DDR3 DIMMs needed. In comparison, the owners of PCs based on AMD AM2 and AM2 + sockets existing need only hook a Phenom processor II and enjoy superior performance through higher clocks IIS AM2 + Phenom.

We would recommend to anyone buying an AMD-powered PC invests in an AM3 chip in order to future proof their investment, but do not blame anyone for expecting a more powerful CPU to appear first.
